Coin Collections - Valuing & Selling Coin Collections
As collectors items, coins are difficult for novice enthusiasts to value. There is sometimes misleading information in the media, and people are often surprised to discover that coins are only worth their face value. Understanding that coins are mass produced, and seldom thrown away, helps to explain why the value is so determined by supply and demand. Fewer coins of a particular mintage creates higher demand, so that its value is directly linked to its scarcity. By checking whether a coin can still be purchased from an official Royal Mint distributor in Brilliant Uncirculated condition will usually mean it will be worth more if it is no longer available.
Condition is key
Collectors prefer coins in 'mint' rather than 'worn' condition, which will command better prices. If you inherit a coin or collection, avoid touching them with your fingers, which can reduce the value or rare, proof or uncirculated coins, and definitely do not try to clean them.
